Kitchener splits in two underground. West and southwest — Forest Heights, Westmount, Doon, Huron Park, Trussler — sit on the Waterloo Moraine's sand and gravel: fast digging, walls that slough, spoil that's often reusable. Central and east — Stanley Park, Chicopee, Grand River South — is heavier till and clay that digs slower, hides boulders and holds water in spring. And in the old wards the soil is fine but the lots are narrow, the trees are protected and the services were never recorded. We plan every dig for the part of the city it's in.
What's different about excavating in Kitchener
Laneway and garden suites are a large share of what we dig now. Kitchener allows additional units in detached structures on many lots, and a footing behind a Victoria Park or Cedar Hill house means a two-metre side yard, a shared driveway and a city-protected maple. Compact machines, material out through the front, root-zone protection.
Moraine sand needs shoring. The west-side sand is a pleasure to dig and a hazard to stand in. Deep excavations get benched or shored before anyone works below the wall.
Clay holds water. Spring digs in Stanley Park and Chicopee can need a pump running while we work, and a lot that has settled toward the house over forty years needs regrading before anyone spends on waterproofing.
Old laterals are failing. Cedar Hill, Mount Hope, Auditorium and King East are full of original clay sewer laterals. When one collapses, the repair is a trench to the property line, coordinated with the City and Region for the road-allowance side.
