Site excavation in Kitchener is mostly about access and soil, and both change with the neighbourhood. On the west and southwest side — Forest Heights, Westmount, Doon, Huron Park, Trussler — you're on the Waterloo Moraine's sand and gravel: fast digging, walls that slough, and spoil that's often reusable as fill. On the central and east side — Stanley Park, Chicopee, Grand River South — it's heavier till and clay pockets that dig slower, hide boulders and hold water in spring. And in the old wards — Victoria Park, Cedar Hill, Mount Hope, Auditorium — the soil is fine but the lots are narrow, the driveways are shared, the trees are protected and the buried services were never recorded.

Old-ward lots
A two-metre side yard, a neighbour's foundation a metre from the property line, a city-protected maple in the front: we've dug plenty of these. Compact machines, material out through the front, root-zone protection, and hand-digging near services the locates couldn't map precisely. It takes longer than a subdivision lot and we price it honestly.
Moraine sand
The west-side sand is a pleasure to dig and a hazard to stand in — deep excavations need benched or shored walls, and we plan for it rather than hoping the wall holds until the footings are poured.
